Former Guidance Counselor Arrested
Thompson Charged With Sexual Battery On A Student
Published On: Oct 14 2011 03:02:51 PM EDT Updated On: Apr 14 2010 11:40:44 AM EDTA former Duval County guidance counselor has been charged with sexual battery on a student at Baldwin High School.
Police arrested Tara Thompson, 23, on Monday. They said she had sexual relations with a teen.
LeDeirdre Johnson drives 30 minutes away twice a day so that her daughter can attend the school. She said she does not mind the commute because she does not like the schools closer to her in Jacksonville. After hearing about the arrest, however, she says she is now thinking twice.
"That is disturbing to hear about that," she said. "I'm trying to keep my daughter safe in school by coming down here. I had no idea."
School officials said they learned about the allegations in mid-December and immediately terminated Thompson. She was still under the 97-day probationary period at the time.
Parents like Johnson, who have other small children, said they are not going to have to figure out how to explain this to their younger kids.
"How do you explain it to a kid who's going to school and a guidance counselor is supposed to protect them? How do you tell them they're not safe in school? I don't know," she said.
Thompson is booked in the Duval County Jail. She is being held on a $150,000 bond.
