Free weekly workouts coming to Hemming Plaza
Aim to get families healthy and promote downtown
It's time to lace up your sneakers and head downtown for the first public outdoor fitness program in Jacksonville. It's an effort to improve everyone's health status while changing the way people think about downtown Jacksonville.
It's called Fitness in the Plaza and it will be held in Hemming Plaza downtown. It's a seven-month campaign that will include exercise and workouts once a week from April to October.
Donteacia Seymore, the programs creator and president of the Seymore Group says, "We have a beautiful and amazing downtown, unfortunately our residents rarely if ever come downtown. And so I was inspired by Michelle Obama's 'Lets Move' campaign and I wanted to figure out a way to incorporate Downtown Jacksonville and getting families out together and getting them excited about fitness . And so Fitness in the Plaza was born."
Fitness in the Plaza launches April 5th and will run until October 26th. The second Friday of each month will be just for children, while the other three will be for adults. The first hour of each workout session will be for Senior Citizens. Organizers want it to be a workout for the entire family.
"Even the kids that can't actually work out they get visual stimulation just for watching their siblings do it," Seymore says.
Spring Miller at My Gym says the kids do a variety of exercises that raise up the heart rate and work up the core.
The program is a partnership between the city of Jacksonville, St. Vincents Health Care and the Seymore Group.
A launch party for the weekly workouts will be this Wednesday, March 6th, inside the Museum of Contemporary Arts during the Art Walk. For more information, you can go to their website at www.fitnessintheplaza.com,
