Fugitive from Fla. arrested at Arizona border
Man wanted in Florida for failing to register as sex offender found in Mexico, arrested in AZ
A fugitive wanted in Florida for failing to register as a sex offender has been arrested in Arizona.
The U.S. Marshals Service says 62-year-old Stephen Ray Douglass was taken into custody Wednesday at the San Luis port of entry in southwestern Arizona.
Authorities say Douglass fled to Mexico almost a decade ago and recently was found at a home in San Luis Rio Colorado, Sonora.
He was convicted in July 1989 of brutally raping a woman in Florida and was sentenced to a 15-year prison sentence for sexual assault and sexual battery.
Douglass was required to register as a sex offender for life in Florida and was compliant until January 2002 when he failed to appear for probation meetings.
It was unclear Thursday whether Douglass has legal representation.
