An estimated 10 million Americans are victimized by identity theft, with one expert reporting there's a new victim every 79 seconds.
To help protect against this fastest-growing of all crimes, Channel 4 and Republic Services Recycling Center are teaming up to to offer free shredding of things like your bank statements, canceled checks, medical records and any other paperwork containing personal information you don't want to fall into the wrong hands.
If you don't have access to a shredder, you can bring any paperwork containing Social Security numbers, bank or credit information, tax information and health forms to Channel 4's studios between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. on Thursday.

Giant, truck-mounted shredders will be on site and personnel, including people with the 125th Fighter Wing of the Florida Air National Guard, will help get your papers to the shredders.
Channel 4 is also asking people to bring non-perishable food donations for Second Harvest Food Bank as they drop off their papers for shredding. WJXT also created a Facebook event with information about Shredder Day and to learn about a contest to win a free personal shredder.
Note: This service is free for individuals to shred personal documents. We cannot provide this service for businesses.
