A new vaccine is in the works for a new strain of the mumps.
One researcher from the University of Georgia got a $1.8 million federal grant to work on the vaccine.
The current vaccine may be showing weakness after there were a greater number of outbreaks in 2006 and 2010, said Professor Baio.
The current vaccine was developed in 1967.
Baio said the new vaccine could serve as a first step to developing vaccines for the other 12 strains of the mumps.
The majority of people who were effected by the most recent outbreaks were vaccinated as children.
The grant comes from the pocket of the National Institutes of Health.
