Groups call for more early voting days in Florida
Labor unions and other liberal groups are urging that Florida expand early voting days and sites.
They proposed several recommendations Monday in response to long lines for early voting as well as on Election Day and delays in getting ballots counted in last Tuesday's election.
Sen. Oscar Brayon, a Miami Gardens Democrat, said he would sponsor legislation based on the recommendations.
They also include proposals that local election officials be given more discretion to select early voting sites and that they dedicate more resources and voter assistance, including translators, for early voting.
The groups want to return to 14 days of early voting. The Republican-led Legislature reduced it to eight days. Critics say that was an attempt to suppress voting by Democrats who vote early in larger numbers that Republicans.
