3 A hugh sigh of relief by more than 500 local families. Thanks to a 10-MILLION DOLLAR donation by a Texas couple, early Head Start classes .. here and around the country .. which going to close this Friday because of the shutdown ... will now stay open .. at least until the end of the month. Channel 4's Ashley Harding spoke with parents and the Local Head Start director. 3 00-1032-401'13-1'20 "those with Head Start thought they were going to have to close their doors by this Friday, but thankfully, with this new angel donation, they're going to be able to stay open. For these families, this is a real lifesaver.""When I saw that on the news this morning, on Channel 4, I was like, wow! Somebody gave 10-million dollars, please, please, please let some of that money come our way!"TRACK There's no doubt about it, Mary Staton's prayers have been answered. Head Start is staying open, and her 3-year old daughter Surah will still be able to go to school...thanks to an incredible 10-million dollar "angel donation"."I just want to personally tell them, thank you, thank you, thank you so much.They saved not only my life by having this program, they saved my daughter."TRACK The money was donated by a Texas couple and is set to save Head Start programs in six states and keep more than seven thousand kids at school. This impacts 560 local families in our region. ////nats "I can tell you, I feel like a thousand pound boulder has been lifted off my back". /////TRACK Connie Stophel is director for Head Start in our region.She says not only would local families be impacted, more than 150 staff members would've been out of a job. She says there were moments when she really worried, and she's amazed by the incredible turn of events. "this just turned around in about two hours last night. After, I had really sent out emails to every donor that we've ever collected anything from us or contributed to us and asked for help."///nats Mary walking and talking through H.S. center/// TRACK Mary Staton says it's not only a relief, it's like a guardian angel was watching.She says she's amazed at how much her daughter has learned and grown thanks to her family at Head Start."to me, it means a lot to know that from the front staff and all the teachers working here, they're concerned about these kids. They love these kids. It's not just the center, the center is beautiful. It's the heart that they have for these kids makes a big difference." 3 Connie Stophel with Head Start tells me this angel donation will keep them open through October 31st.Now if they do get their government funding back, she says they'll reimburse the donor. If they don't, that money will be forgiven. 3 Ashley, it was mentioned that the fund would keep this program open through the end of the month.If the shutdown goes beyond that, are the people who run head start here worried about what they will do then? ### Tom .. believe it or not .. Connie Stophel also told me that last night, she got ANOTHER call from ANOTHER generous donor and if that happens, they've offered to pick up the tab to keep them open as long as possible.
