Honoring a Columbia County correctional officer killed in the line of duty. Today... the community gathered for a memorial service ...for 24-year-old Sergeant Ruben Thomas. He died when an inmate stabbed him two years ago. It happened while he was working at Columbia Correctional Institution in Lake City. The theme this year, imprinted on this brick - Never Forgotten." 03:08:28 "He was very special, irreplaceable, just full of life, loved his family..." Two years after Sergeant Ruben Thomas was killed in the line of duty - his presence can still be felt in this Lake City community... 03:15:08 "Today was all about honor, it was bringing them out and showing that we're honoring his memory and then commemorating the event by setting the theme of Never Forgotten." This monument was already in place outside the prison. It has a picture of Thomas on each side of it, the names of his daughter and son with their hand prints, and it says, "My daddy, my hero." Thomas' fiance was pregnant with their son Elias, and daughter Emma was just a year old when he was killed. 03:08:00"we talk about him like he's still there...
