Inmate Faces Possible Death Sentence

LAKE CITY, Fla. -

Jury selection is under way in Lake City for the sentencing of a local jail inmate who has admitted strangling another prisoner. <P /><IMG SRC="http://images.ibsys.com/2001/0612/815659.jpg" WIDTH="120" HEIGHT="164" ALT="John Blackwelder" ALIGN="RIGHT" HSPACE="10" VSPACE="5" BORDER="0" />Back in March, John Blackwelder (pictured, right) pleaded guilty to killing Raymond Wigley. The victim was strangled on May 6, 2000. <P /> Wigley, who was serving a life sentence, was found bleeding from his head with a sheet tied around his neck. The two men did not share the same cell. <P /> Blackwelder faces a possible death sentence. The penalty phase of the case could begin Tuesday and is scheduled for the rest of the week. Circuit Judge Vernon Douglas is presiding.
