A bill authorizing the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office to use cameras to spot red-light runners and issue tickets was passed by City Council on Tuesday night, and the cash-strapped police are expected to waste no time getting them installed.

The city has plans to put 25 "traffic infraction detectors" at 18 of Jacksonville's most heavily traveled intersections. (See full list of locations at bottom of this story.)

The number of people killed in traffic crashes is up substantially so far this year -- 95 in 2012 -- and police believe the red light cameras at these intersections could decrease fatalities by up to 50 percent.

The Sheriff's Office hopes its contractor, Redflex, will have the first cameras installed in January, but signs warning motorists of the cameras will be going up in advance. For the first month the cameras are operational, only a warning will be mailed to the address of the registered owner of the car. After that, a fine of $158 per infraction will be mailed. If the ticket is not paid within 30 days, the fee goes up to $262.

The city expects violations caught by the cameras will bring in $1.5 million in revenue next year.

A Sheriff's Office spokeswoman said an officer will review every citation issued as a result of a red light camera. While there will be no additions to staff, there will be an increased workload for those officers reviewing online reports.

Police say using the cameras is more than a question of revenue. They are hoping the cameras will serve as a deterrent to motorists going through red lights, which will cut down on crashes.
