Police says Thursday's double shooting in Oceanway was an attempted murder of a woman by her husband, who then killed himself.
The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office says officers called to the 3400 block of Hickory Landing Court about 12:30 p.m. found 43-year-old Robert Frederick Griffin dead inside.
His wife, who police have not named, was transported to Shands Jacksonville Medical Center with critical injuries.
The married couple's 19-year-old son, Dylan, said he lived with his parents at the home at the end of the street and never imagined something like this happening.
"Basically, I was in the room. All I heard was my mom yelling for me, and I have bad stomach pains, so I was just in the bed and all I heard was 'bang bang' and I didn't think nothing of it," Dylan said. "Then all I heard was silence, and I went in there and just saw them laying on the ground knocked out."
After being questioned by investigators with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office for a couple hours, Dylan was on his way to join other family members checking on his mom at Shands Jacksonville Medical Center.
"Her condition is critical and it's touch and go at the hospital right now," Sgt. Michael Paul said. "The last report we got was that she was critical and her condition is life-threatening."
"We don't know who may have been the assailant, whether it's the male or the female," Paul added. "We're at the beginning stages, at this point. There was no sign of anyone coming or going from the residence either, so we're pretty confident it was all inside that residence."
According to the Duval County Clerk of Courts website, the couple who lived at the home divorced in 2009.
"They argued, but it's never violence or anything," Dylan said. "I never saw it coming."
The shootings are something people living on Hickory Landing Court say they've never experienced.
"I don't understand how something like this could happen, but it could happen in this neighborhood as well as any other neighborhood in the area," neighbor Bud Wakeajm said. "It doesn't matter whether it's a nice neighborhood or a run down neighborhood. Things like this occur and it's sad."
Wakeajm said the couple had been living together and had "been back for quite a while now."
"I'm going to miss him. He was a good neighbor," Wakeajm said of the husband.
