  • Jaguars Didn't Click In Tennessee

    JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -

It?s pretty simple I suppose. If the Jaguars play well, they have a chance to win. If not, no chance.

    • Garrard Nearly Perfect. Why Not...

They don?t have the players or the talent to get the job done if they?re not clicking.

Sunday's game featured a record-setting four rushing touchdowns of more than 50 yards: two by Chris Johnson and two by Maurice Jones Drew. The Jaguars had two 1-play drives, TD runs of 80 and 79 yards by MJD. But he only carried the ball eight times for the game.

?We have to do a better job executing the game plan,? quarterback David Garrard said afterward. ?We all just have to get better. Period.?

Garrard was under pressure during the game, sacked four times and dumped a bunch by the Titans but he still is slow in his decision-making and the occasional inaccurate pass lead to a 3 and out or an interception. Without him at top form, they usually don?t have a chance. He was a different player from the one who had a field day against the Titans here in their first meeting of the year.

Defensively the Jaguars were without Rashean Mathis. That might have made a difference in the passing game but it wasn?t Vince Young?s arm that beat the Jaguars this week. He did throw a nice TD pass and one good completion on third and 6 to keep the go-ahead drive alive. But Chris Johnson ran for 228 yards, scoring two touchdowns and made the Jaguars defense look like a pop Warner team when it comes to tackling.

?Fit and finish,? is something Head Coach Jack Del Rio likes to stress when it comes to playing defense. While the Jaguars seemed to be often in the right ?fit? it was their ?finish? or lack thereof that was a big part of the problem.

Johnson, LenDale White and others had no problem with running over or stepping out of tackles even when the Jaguars defenders were in the right spots. I don?t know if that?s a problem that a young team has or it?s just because they ?need players.? That?s a nice way of saying they?re just not good enough.

If there?s hope for the future because the young players look like they can play, then hopefully they?ll be able to find some others like that, and soon. Derrick Cox missed an interception in the end zone that came back to haunt the Jaguars. It?s that kind of play that costs teams in the scheme of things.

If you have a chance to make a play, you better make it or somebody else is going to take advantage of it. Cox didn?t make the play and the Titans ended up scoring a touchdown.

And look at Reggie Nelson. Is it me or is Nelson always following the play somehow, five yards behind? And can he tackle somebody sometime? Nelson doesn?t seem to mind hitting people, but wrapping up is a whole different story. That?s why I?m looking for the Jaguars to get somebody out of the defensive backfield who will hit somebody. Somebody wide receivers and running backs will start looking for if they?re running free in the secondary.

But that?s for the future. For now they just have to play better. The guys on the defensive line have to stop the opponents at the point of attack and occasionally pressure the opposing quarterback. The linebackers have to tackle guys when they fill the holes and stop trying to do so much.

?Do your job and shut up,? is how Kyle Brady describes Bill Belichick?s philosophy. I know the offensive line can play better and I saw Tra Thomas in the game so it?s not as if they?re ?taking their lumps? while playing the young guys.

The Jaguars are an average team, probably equal to their record of 3 and 4, while the Titans are something different than their 1-6 record, with or without Vince Young. Either way the Jaguars just didn?t ?show when it counted and they do that, they lose.

Kansas City is a bad team, and they?ll be in town next week without arguably their best player, Larry Johnson, who?s been suspended after a disagreement with the club.
