  • Jaguars Looked Good In Last Preseason Game

    JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -

I don?t care who they were playing. The Jaguars looked good in their final preseason game.

They looked like a football team. They had their uniforms on, they were playing in the stadium. The other team had their road uniforms on and they were trying.

Sure it was mostly second and third team players for Washington, but I don?t care.

The Jaguars did just what you hoped they?d do. They ran the ball. The passed it with precision.

The wide receivers made good catches. Good adjustments on the ball. The defense was solid. Even got to the quarterback. All in the first half.

On the down side, Maurice Jones-Drew left the game with what was officially called a ?leg contusion.? He was in a ?boot? in the hallway, so that can?t be good.

The Jaguars had 11 first downs in the first half. They were 7 of 11 on third down.

David Garrard and Todd Bouman were 16 of 23 for 166 yards and a TD (and should have had a second).

Perhaps the most impressive thing was who was catching the ball and how they were doing it. Mike Sims-Walker had 4 catches. So did Troy Williamson. MJD had three. Jarrett Dillard two. Mike Thomas even caught a ball.

It?s important that the receivers have something to show for the exhibition season. The Jaguars haven?t had anybody who could catch and run in a while so anybody, I mean anybody, who can do that would find a place in the lineup.

?I am on cloud nine,? Sims-Walker said. ?I have so much inside me that I need to let out so I?m just trying to let it out game by game.?

David Garrard admitted that winning the game was important.

?Moving the ball and putting up points whether it?s three or seven points, showing that the offense is maturing and moving in the right direction. That is what we were able to show tonight.?

Here?s how Washington admitted that they were looking at their reserves. Head Coach Jim Zorn said, ?That?s the battle you want to be a part of. You are going to have to play against starters, and that?s a good opportunity for our guys, to place them in that position and see how they respond. We put a lot of pressure on the defense early by turning the ball over.?

On the offensive line we saw two rookies and Tony Pashos at guard. Only the coaches will know if that worked or if they?ll have to retool the line again.

    So it wasn?t the starters.

It was a win. They got some things done. Some guys won jobs and others will be on the street.

    And hopefully MJD is OK.
