Jewelry store burglary solved 4 years later

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -

More than four years after a burglary of nearly $100,000 of jewelry at a St. Augustine store, investigators say a DNA match has led to charges against an employee at the time.

St. Augustine police are looking for 43-year-old Shawn Slattery, who's charged with burglary and grand theft. Police said he could be in Florida, New York or Montana.

Just after 5 a.m. Sept. 24, 2007, police were called to Vaccaro Estate Jewelry in the 2500 block of North Ponce De Leon Blvd, where they found the glass front door and several show cases smashed. The owner said that $99,238.73 of jewelry was missing from the store.

Blood evidence left on a shard of glass was collected and submitted to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement for analysis. It came back that there was no match at that time.

On Dec. 1, FDLE notified police that it had received a positive match on the blood sample. Investigators said it matched that of Slattery, who had not been in the store between the time of the burglary and investigators collecting the blood sample. Slattery's blood left at the scene indicated he was in the store during the burglary, investigators said.

If you know where Slattery is, call the St. Augustine Police Department at 904-209-3482 or Crime Stoppers at 888-277-8477.
