JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -

A jury recommends death for a Jacksonville man convicted of killing his estranged wife and attacking his sister-in-law in 2009.

A Duval County jury voted 12-0 on Thursday to recommend that 24-year-old Lesly Jean-Philippe should die on a charge of first-degree murder.

The same jury convicted Jean-Philippe of first-degree murder and aggravated battery earlier this month. Circuit Judge Adrian Soud will make the final decision regarding Jean-Philippe's fate at a sentencing hearing scheduled for May.

Authorities said Jean-Philippe had been staying with family in Rhode Island in August 2009, trying to clear his head, when he decided to return to Jacksonville to confront his wife. Jean-Philippe went to 24-year-old Elkie Jean-Philippe's apartment, where he attacked her and her sister.

Medical examiners found a total of 52 cuts on the wife's body.

A defense attorney argued the stabbing was not premeditated.
