JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -

The jury in the trial of a Jacksonville man accused of beating his girlfriend to death inside her Northside home reached a verdict Thursday afternoon.

They found Steven Montgomery guilty of second-degree murder in the death of 23-year-old Tarnesha Ellis.

The murder took place in October 2005, and police said that after killing Ellis, Montgomery ate ice cream with her 2-year-old son before leaving the scene.

He was arrested a few days later in a stolen car in Georgia.

Montgomery is expected to be back in court on Monday for sentencing.
