Round the clock work goes on at the Zoo .. where handlers are still making sure all the animals stay warm .. even with sunshine helping their cause. The zoo always takes preventative measures anytime temperatures drop to 50 degrees -- but stepped up its efforts last night when temperatures really dropped! Channel 4's Ashley Mitchem went back to the zoo today to see how the various creatures handled the bitter cold. 3 00-0608-1328-33For animals like lions, the cold weather isn't as big of a deal because of their warm coats..but animals like the komodo dragon need help getting warm.Mark Beshel, Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens 40:37 They can stay out in the wind they can stay out in the rain the wind and things like that but it has to be at least 65 degrees so on the cold nights like this they stay locked inside. The zoo spent the all Monday preparing for the cold snap and handlers say animals made it over night without any issues..although the power did cut out briefly because how much electricity they have powered up to keep the animals warm.Dan Maloney, Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens 43:41 Everyone has fared well they've got another cold night coming so it's always a challenge but we've got areas for them to stay warm. Some of the tactics the zoo does to keep the animals warm and comfortable .. are put down a hay bed, turn on heaters and heat lamps, distribute blankets and heat the water for the ducks and birds. But not all the animals are bothered by the cold. The weather makes the rhinos active...44:43 some of the animals seem to enjoy the cooler if not colder weather some of the animals will be inside today but we'll give them the option to go in and out if they want toThe zoo staffed an extra person last night to make sure the animals were being protected. No animal seems to be distressed.44:31 The animal staff are really keyed in on this they know their animals really well and you know we're crossing out fingers I think we're going to be okThe zoo has discounted prices during the winter to promote guest visits because some animals prefer to stay hidden away during the cold season.
