Lightning strikes 2 Central Florida homes
Homes in Orlando, Winter Garden hit
Two Central Florida families were cleaning up instead of celebrating on July 4th after lightning struck their homes, WKMG-TV in Orlando reports.
Melody Yee was at her home in the 6000 block of Chantry Street in Orlando when a bolt of lightning hit her house about 8 p.m. Tuesday.
Yee said the lightning sparked a fire, which quickly moved into her garage.
"I was so scared because I was all by myself last night," said Yee.
A neighbor saw the lightning strike and immediately called 911.
"I ain't gonna lie, it shocked me," said neighbor Najee Scott.
When firefighters arrived, they were able to contain the fire to the garage, but Yee said the family still lost thousands of dollars worth of lawn equipment and personal items.
In Winter Garden, another bolt of lightning struck a home in the 15000 block of Grandlund Street.
Jon Edwards was home at the time and called 911 after he thought the bolt caught a nearby home on fire.
"It lit up in real bright blue and made a real big buzzing sound throughout the house. It was like there was a neon light shining on my house," said Edwards.
Damage estimators came out to Yee's home Wednesday to evaluate the damage. An estimate wasn't immediately available.
