3 Some people are beginning to think if Jacksonville had a middle name .. it would be "road construction." They would include the drivers who rely on the Main Street Bridge to get to and from downtown. For almost 6 months .. the department of transportation has been renovating the 1941 bridge .. and the 11 million dollar makeover still has a long way to go. Channel 4 Investigator Vic Micolucci has been looking into how much longer .. He is joining us LIVE from the Southbank. Vic. 3 VIC LIVE IN: They have some time to go...a little less than a year until everything is done. People have told me it's a bother having to go around this bridge to get to and from downtown, but the FDOT says it's work that had to be done... 3 00-08133-13746:13 loud Nat hammering If you're downtown...either northbank or southbank you'll either see it ...or hear it...43:49 loud Nat The Main Street bridge has become a big construction site. With it comes detours ... That affect s a lot of commutes, including Gary Meziere's... But he's remaining optimistic ...02:47 Vic - do you hope it finishes soon? I do, yeah it would be nice to see the improvements they made. The project began in January...and is scheduled to finish in Spring 2015....50:17 the project started as more than a year-long project. Department of Transportation spokeswoman Laurie Sanderson says it's on schedule...with 18 to 20 construction workers each day. She says the 73 year old bridge needed some renovations...51:39 we have made a temporary repairs for damage that has been done over the years to the bridge. This is a project done to make permanent repairs.The steel supports are being fixed and replaced...the walkway is being redone to make it safer...and it's getting a new paint job.For now, weekdays 9 to 4 you can't get onto the bridge from the Southbank at Riverplace Blvd...instead, drivers are detoured onto the Acosta Bridge. The bridge is shutdown on select weekends for the major repairs...FDOT telling us they have to do that about 25 times. While some are not happy with the detours or the loud noise... 00:19 I think they're working very hard. Others are being patient...Anticipating a better bridge, tying together the river city...01:41 I suppose it's moving along. They seem like they are doing work. It doesn't look like they are just laying around or anything like that. VIC LIVE TAG: The closure on Riverplace Blvd is supposed to continue weekdays 9 to 4 until about September...then crews say they'll work on the other side of the bridge...and close the bridge entrance near the Landing.
