Makeup's ugly secrets
The 3 ingredients to avoid
The cosmetic world has revolutionized the way we age. But since the Food and Drug Administration doesn't check ingredients in beauty products, it can be hard to regulate harmful toxins in cosmetics.
Experts say products we expect to be safe may have hormone disrupters in them or even carcinogens. So when buying products, think safety before price and make sure three words are not in it.
Number 1: Fragrance. Experts say synthetic frangrance have pthalates. Pthalates make things absorb better to the skin so the scent lasts longer and makes our lotions look creamier. But they're also a hormone disrupter. Now watch out for this: Fragrance-free products only means the product has no scent, but could still contain the toxin.
Number 2: Parabens. These are estrogen mimickers and have been found in breast cancer. Although it does not cause it, measurable concentrations of six different Parabens have been identified in biopsy samples from breast tumors. Parabens are absorbed through inact skin. So before choosing your deodorant, check the label for the harmful toxin.
Number 3: Formaldehyde. The chemical helps to ensure the safety of products by protecting them against contamination. But it's also an irritant to the skin if consumed in large amounts. Last year, government scientists listed it as a carcinogen, a substance that could cause cancer. To be safe, always look for products that have the certified USDA Organic logo.
If you need help finding out about hazards in your beauty products, the Environmental Working Group ranks beauty products for you.
