Detectives with the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office have arrested a 32-year-old man on a charge of second-degree murder in connection with the death of his girlfriend early Tuesday.

Terrell Lee Jordan II is charged in the death of Kristi Lynn Dennis, 29.

Deputies were called at 12:15 a.m. to a report of someone who may be ill at a home in the 1400 block of North Fruit Cove Road.

Dennis was found unconscious inside the home. She could not be revived and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators said the cause of death is pending an autopsy.

Deputies said a domestic dispute between the two led to a violent struggle. They said they believe Dennis fought for her life and lost.

"The second-degree homicide charge in this case goes along with the fact that it's not a premeditated homicide, which means this is a domestic disturbance that went too far and unfortunately led to the death of this individual," Sgt. Chuck Mulligan said.

Detectives released few details about what possibly led to the killing, but said it was a brutal struggle. They said they believe they know how Dennis died but were waiting for a report from the Medical Examiner before they say anything more about the killing.

"I can tell you that he did discuss with us the events of that night, and of course there are some nuances that we'll have to work through," Mulligan said. "The investigation is still active. That information will come through in the next couple days."

The killing is the third in Fruit Cove since May.

Neighbors said they're surprised by the violence.

"It's a quiet country neighborhood," Chip Williams said.
