JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -

The man accused of killing a McDonald's employee who was trying to protect his boss from being robbed pleaded not guilty Thursday to charges of armed robbery and murder.

Nesta Walker, 28, was arrested Feb. 22 after police said they chased him after 45-year-old Raynold Orelus was shot and killed in a parking lot on Baymeadows Road to northwest Jacksonville.

Police said Orelus was walking the restaurant manager to her SUV so she could go to the bank and make a deposit when Walker approached them with a gun. When Orelus tried to fight off the robber, he was shot once in the chest.

State Attorney Angela Corey released a statement after the shooing, calling it "a very disturbing crime committed at a public restaurant during lunch hour."

After Walker appeared at Thursday's arraignment, he was scheduled to return next month and his trial could begin as early as July.
