Man On Trial In Estranged Wife's Killing
Prosecutors: Man Posed As Pizza Delivery Man, Attacked Wife, Sister-In-Law
A man accused of posing as a pizza delivery man to get inside an apartment and kill his estranged wife is on trial.
Prosecutors said Lesly Jean-Philippe stabbed his wife, Elkie Jean-Philippe, to death at the Paradise Island apartment complex in August 2009. Prosecutors said the two had been separated for a while.
They said Elkie Jean-Philippe was at home with her sister when her estranged husband, who she believed to be out of state, showed up.
Prosecutors said when the two women answered the door for whom they thought was a pizza delivery man, Lesly Jean-Philippe forced his way in and struck the victim's sister on the head with a tire iron. Prosecutors said he then attacked his wife and killed her.
The victim's sister testified in court Tuesday. Prosecutors played the 911 call from her when her sister was killed.
The victim's neighbor, Christina Leon, also testified. She said she talked to the 911 dispatcher and stopped the victim's sister's bleeding from her head. She said she also spoke with police officers and first responders when they got to the scene.
"I tried to calm her down, see if anyone else was inside," Leon said. "She kept saying, 'He's going to kill my sister. He's going to kill my sister.'"
Leon said she heard screams and called 911. She said she went to see what happened and broke a window in the victim's apartment to distract the attacker.
"I actually heard really blood-curdling screams, someone asking for help," Leon said.
Prosecutors said Lesly Jean-Philippe had several wounds. Investigators said they believe they were self-inflicted cuts or stab wounds. In court, he had visible scars on his neck below his chin.
