JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -

Police have charged a 46-year-old man with murder after a man stabbed at Sister's Creek Marina along the banks of the St. Johns River early Thursday morning died.

Police said John Swearingden chased then stabbed Richard Haddon, 37, about 1:30 a.m. in the public park along Heckscher Drive. Haddon was taken to Shands Jacksonville Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. He died the next day.

Police said Swearingden was arrested at the scene and charged with aggravated battery.

According to an arrest report, Swearingden admitted to stabbing Haddon, but claimed it was in self-defense. Officers noted Swearingden had no defensive wounds and there were no witnesses to his claim.

After Haddon died, the charge on Swearingden was upgraded to murder. He was being held without bail in the Duval County jail.
