A 25-year-old Jacksonville man was convicted this week on two counts of aggravated assault and one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon in an attack on two brothers.
In July 2010, Cory Johnson assaulted the brothers at the Morningside Apartments on Jammes Road on the Westside.
Johnson threatened Derrick Denton with a handgun inside Denton's ex-girlfriend's apartment. Denton was moving his belongings out of the apartment when the incident occurred.
Johnson, a friend of the ex-girlfriend, then went outside and threatened Denton's brother, Michael, by pointing the gun at him while Denton sat in his car in the parking lot.
When the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office arrived at the scene, Johnson gave the gun to a co-defendant to hide in the bushes next to the apartment.
Johnson is a habitual felony offender with convictions for possession of cocaine and grand theft auto. He faces up to 40 years in prison and will be sentenced the week of March 25.
