Officers were forced to shoot a man who pointed a gun at them outside a Springfield home, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.
Chief Tom Hackney with JSO said the incident started when the man was inside his home in the 100 block of East 5th Street threatening to hurt himself.
The man inside the home has been identified as 41-year-old William Haines of Jacksonville.
Chief Hackney said someone inside the home called police.
When police responded, the man was standing on the porch with a handgun.
Hackney said when the man pointed the gun at officers, one of them fired a single shot at the man, hitting him in the chest.
"They gave instructions for the subject to drop the handgun. The subject then raised the gun at them and took 2 steps forward. One of the officers fired one time. The subject was struck in the chest," Hackney said.
The William Haines was taken into custody and transported to Shands with critical but stable injuries.
The officers involved have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure.
