3 Knocked out of commission for more than a month, the St. Johns River Ferry is back in action. Let's go live to mayport...where some drivers are hitching their first ride...since December 1st... The ferry had to be closed down for inspection and maintenance. Channel 4's Erica Rakow joins us live... with more on what this means for the community... 3 3 It's been a long wait for those who normally rely on the ferry... Since December 1st, it's had been dry-docked for a mandatory inspection by the Coast Guard. While the ferry was undergoing service, many were forced to take detours. That meant traveling longer distances and adding much more to drive time. So the grand reopening was a cause for celebration. There was live music, food trucks and art for the kids over the weekend. Locals say the ferry is not only a convenience, but it's become a vital part of Mayport's history. They say it's great for the community, and it connects everything in a way nothing else really can. 3 3 15.13.16 OH ITS VERY IMPORTANT FOR US OVER HERE ON THE ISLAND--WE FIND IT AN EASY WAY TO GO UP TO AMELIA 151323 FERNANDINA, THEY HAVE GREAT PARKS UP HERE--IT'S A WONDERFUL EXPIERENCE 151328 3 Earlier this year, Jaxport decided it could no longer afford to operate the ferry. With the community's support, many are hopeful it will continue to operate.
