An emotional day at Mayport .. as one of the base's mainstay warships was decommissioned. The frigate USS Robert G. Bradley served our country for nearly 30 years and was "home away from home" to countless sailors. Today, the Bradley's current crew paid tribute to the ship during a ceremony. Channel 4's Ashley Harding was there and is joining us... Ashley, the ship must have meant a great deal to these sailors... 3 3 It certainly did. Many of the people I spoke with talked about the ship's history. It was named after Lieutenant Robert G Bradley.Bradley led a repair party to save the USS Princeton after it was attacked by a Japanese dive bomber in the Philippines in World War Two. He was killed and awarded the Navy Cross after his death.Today's ceremony was about celebrating the ship's legacy, plus taking a look at Mayport's future. 3 3 00-1021-2730-3556-1'011'27- 1'30///nats bell /// ///nats "united States Navy departing" followed by whistle///TRACK With each bell toll came the exit of the officers...then more than 200 sailors disembarked from the USS Robert G Bradley. They know, it's the last time they'll ever do this. After nearly 30 years of service, Navy officials decommissioned the vessel.55:21--55:32 "this ship has done a lot for this country.I've known the crew personally as well as our leadership aboard the USS Bradley and I'm just sad to see it go."37:47--37:58 3 "she's taken us places ...from the darkest corners of Africa, all way to the Persian Gulf down in South America. So she's got some miles on her."TRACK The USS Bradley is one of seven guided missle frigates decommissioned at Mayport within the last few years, including the Klakring and the Underwood. As these ships are retired, the navy will bring in smaller, faster, more versatile ships...like the LCS.04:06--04:23 3 3 "what we're looking for is increasing our capabilities over all.So it would be wrong to say, or incorrect to say that we're getting rid of ships and replacing those. What we're really doing is we're expanding our total capability with the ship platforms we're bringing in."/// music playing///TRACK Finally...at the end, the ship's flag was lowered for the last time. ///clapping/// A moment these men and women call "bittersweet"....56:21--56:29 "it's actually kind of sad because we've done three years with the Robert G Bradley, so it's part of our family. We've met so many great people who are now our best friends.""she was a very, very good crew." 3 From here the ship will be taken to Philadelphia, where it could be sold to foreign military. 3 Ashley, you had mentioned these newer, more versatile ships will be brought in. Do we know when they'll officially come to Mayport?Answer: Mary, I asked about that. I'm told the first of those ships will be received by Mayport in 2016.
