The Alachua County Sheriff's Office has made two arrests in the death of a 5-year-old boy.

Deputies were called to the 600 block of Northwest 255th Drive in Newberry the night of Dec. 27 after receiving a 911 call that a child was unresponsive and not breathing.

Javarian Wallace was taken to North Florida Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

The boy's aunt, 55-year-old Alice Owens, and mother, 26-year-old Valerie Owens, were both arrested Wednesday at the home. They are charged with homicide and child neglect. Both were being held without bail.

An autopsy indicated Javarian suffered multiple traumatic injuries to his body. The boy's aunt and mother said they were the only caretakers of the child the day of his death, deputies said.
