SANFORD, Fla. -

Sanford police have called off the search for a pet monkey that attacked and bit two people before running into a neighborhood.

Police received a call Sunday afternoon about a monkey bite at 325 Live Oak Blvd.

By the time officers arrived, the monkey, whose name is Zeke, had run off and jumped into some nearby trees, neighbors said.

Witnesses told Local 6 the monkey, described as a large animal, bit two people and has been running around the neighborhood.

Police have reopened the neighborhood after roping it off Sunday afternoon. They are asking anyone who sees the monkey to call police, and do not approach it.

Police said the owner does not have a license to keep the animal..

If the monkey is caught, animal control officials will check to make sure the animal's shots are current, and they may return him to the owner.

However, the owner could face fines.
