Motorcycles Being Targeted More By Thieves
Car theft is a constant problem, but motorcycle theft is gaining popularity in Jacksonville.
Local resident Ben Parker discovered this firsthand when he and a friend had their Suzuki sports bikes stolen while they were in a nightclub. Each bike, like the one pictured, is worth $10,000.
Parker said his bike, which can reach speeds of almost 200 mph, was stolen in a matter of seconds.
Officers say sports bikes are desirable, not only because of their look and popularity, but also because they're so light.
"We are seeing predominately sports bikes being stolen, that's the main type that's stolen," explained Sgt. Ron Thompson.
Thompson said thieves know sports bikes weigh only 200 pounds. So, thieves simply pull up next to a sports bike in a pickup truck, load the bike in the truck and drive off.
