A woman charged in the 2010 kidnapping, armed robbery and murder of a 83-year-old man abducted from the rental car lot of Jacksonville International Airport in 2010 was convicted Tuesday in the attempted murder of her ex-boyfriend.
Prosecutors say Shanda Nedreia Merritt and her co-defendant, Raymond Austin, lured Carl Davis to a Jacksonville parking lot in 2010 and shot him in the chest.
A jury found Merritt, 36, guilty of first-degree attempted murder and aggravated fleeing or attempting to elude a law enforcement officer
Merritt was Davis’ ex-girlfriend.
At the time of the shooting, Merritt was driving a stolen car. Jacksonville Sheriff’s Officers spotted the vehicle and tried to pull Merritt over -- she refused to stop. The car was a rental vehicle belonging to 83-year-old Charles Soukup (pictured, right).
Merritt is charged in Soukup’s abduction and death. Merritt, Austin and two co-defendants are accused of kidnapping Soukup from the Jacksonville International Airport and then killing him. Soukup’s body was found near the airport. A trial date has not been set in the case.
Merritt faces life in prison for Davis’ attempted murder. She will be sentenced next month.
