NASSAU COUNTY, Fla. -

Affected areas of Nassau County will begin receiving aerial spraying for mosquitoes on Wednesday overnight into early morning.

Spraying will also take place in Columbia County on Wednesday.

Since widespread mosquito control requires the controlled use of insecticides, all state and federal approval steps are designed to make sure significant action is taken and that the public as well as domestic and wild animals are protected.

Several state and federal agencies must be involved to assure all public health interests are considered.

By law, insecticide formulations must be among those approved and registered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for use in urban areas for mosquito control.

The Florida Department of Health recommends that residents "drain and cover":

Drain standing water to stop mosquitoes from living and multiplying around homes or businesses. Cover the skin to protect from mosquito bites and from the diseases mosquitoes carry.
