The northeast Florida legal community is remembering a Nassau County judge who lost a battle with cancer.
Judge Granville "Doc" Burgess died Thursday night at the age of 63.
He served as a county court judge in Nassau County.
Prior to joining the bench, Burgess was a longtime prosecutor under State Attorney Harry Shorstein.
His family has lived in Nassau County for generations.
One local attorney, Gene Nichols, says he litigated against Burgess in court, and before him as a judge, and shared these thoughts:
"Judge Burgess exemplified courtesy and professionalism during his legal career. He was a true gentlemen in all aspects. A good Judge can be easily defined by how well he or she relates to those around them. Judge Burgess was loved by every person in the Nassau County Courthouse, most especially by his Assistant Monica and his bailiff Adam. His smile, gentle nature, and keen wit will be missed by all."
A visitation for Burgess will be held Monday from 5-7 p.m. at the Oxley-Heard Funeral Home in Fernandina Beach.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First Presbyterian Church in Fernandina Beach.
