The Florida Department of Transportation started work on a new stretch of railroad track on Monday.
The first piece of the track will run from the Orlando Amtrak station to Lakeland Avenue in Maitland.
The entire project will span across 61 miles of the state.
When completed, the rail will run from Volusia County, to the northeast of Orlando, to Osceola County in the south.
The goal of the expansion is to correct rail alignment to make the ride smoother for passengers.
Sun Rail trains will use the track which is estimated to finish in 2016.
The project costs an estimated $1.3 billion.
