No foul play suspected for body in truck
Investigators say fire may have started from cigarette
The shell of a burnt pickup truck sits behind an auto repair shop in Macclenny.
Baker County deputies said no foul play is suspected in the death of a man found dead in a burning truck on Saturday morning.
The Sheriff's Office believes the fire may have started from a cigarette, and that 50-year-old George Hodges, of Macclenny, died from smoke inhalation.
Hodges' burned body was found in the truck behind Robbie's Car and Truck Center in Macclenny.
Investigators said a witness heard an explosion and saw that a pickup truck was on fire behind the auto shop. They said the explosion was likely a tire that popped from the heat of the flames.
When firefighters put the fire out, they found Hodges' body inside, investigators said. They said it was burned beyond recognition.
Dental records were inconclusive, and more forensic comparisons were done to identify the body.
Investigators said Hodges' body was found in an Isuzu pickup truck that had been sitting behind the repair shop for months. The place's owner, Robbie Kirkland, said he was waiting to make repairs to the truck. He said he didn't know why a man was inside.
"Maybe he crawled in there, fell asleep with a cigarette or something and caught fire, something like that," Kirkland said.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement was brought in to help with the investigation.
