Nordstrom Inc. announced Monday it will open a full-line retail store at Jacksonville's St. Johns Town Center in fall 2014.
The two-level, 124,000 square-foot store is one of two new stores the Seattle-based retailer announced. The other will be in Houston.
Nordstrom, a fashion specialty retailer, will anchor a new wing on the southwest side of the 1.1 million square-foot, open-air shopping center near the exchange of Interstates 95 and 295 on the Southside. It plans to carry a full line of merchandise including shoes, clothes and accessories for men, women and children.
"We've had our eye on Jacksonville for a long time, so it’s gratifying for us to now have this opportunity to open our doors at St. Johns Town Center," Erik Nordstrom, president of stores for Nordstrom Inc., said in a statement. "We’re fortunate to have loyal customers in Jacksonville and excited to be able to serve them better with a store at the First Coast’s top shopping destination."
Simon Property Group, which operates the Town Center, says it attracts 10 million visitors each year and features many stores that customers won't find anywhere else in Jacksonville.
"I've hoped for it for years, so when I saw it on my email this morning, I thought, 'Oh my gosh, finally,'" said shopper Linda Plummer. "I really didn't have any idea they were considering Jacksonville, so I think that's good for us."
Some shoppers are concerned that Nordstrom's reputation for high-end merchandise might make it a little pricy.
"It's just more choices. When you have more choices, ideally prices would come down, but I know how expensive Nordstrom is," shopper Henry Arato said. "That’s not a knock on Nordstrom. That’s just the way it is. The market will bear it out."
Nordstrom now operates 231 stores in 31 states, including 117 full-line stores, 110 Nordstrom Racks, two Jeffrey boutiques, one treasure & bond store and one clearance store.
