3 One word could have a big impact on obesity in the United States. The American Medical Association adopted a new policy that officially labels obesity as a DISEASE! What does this change mean for people who are fighting their weight? "It takes over your life, just like any other disease does and it does really run your life as to what you can and can't do.. it's overwhelming."Thanks to major lifestyle changes and bariatric surgery, Tobi has lost about 90 pounds.She tells us the American Medical Association's decision to classify obesity as a disease is a great one. "I think it could help so many people." "My initial thought was it's about time..I think it's a very good decision."While the director of graduate studies in Nursing at UNF concedes there will be costs up front.. it's a case of pay me now or pay me later. "Right now insurance companies are paying a lot later. They're paying for hip replacements and knee replacements that perhaps would not be necessary had the patient lost weight."It's an opinion echoed by bariatric and laproscopic surgeon Miro Uchal.."It makes sense to invest inprevention cuz in the long run you will save money."Dr. Uchel's patients come to him in dire need of help.. and he feels the AMA's decision will allow more people to get help before it becomes a life or death situation. 3 "We're addressing more obesity, people are appreciative and I believe there will be more prevention done on every single line." 3 I will talk about cost and tease ahead to to the 6:30 pkg So, what actually happens differently in the doctors office with obesity being a disease?
