We are learning more tonight about an altercation that sent a Jacksonville police officer to the hospital with stab wounds - and ended with a suspect dead. The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office says Officer Steven Brown has been released from the hospital. Investigators say 29-year-old Brandon Peters stabbed a friend - then stabbed Officer Brown yesterday. It happened in a Northwest Jacksonville on Doe Lane, north of Garden Street after 1:30. After the stabbing, Officer Brown fireD several shots at Peters - which killed him. Police also tell us the initial man who was stabbed is expected to be okay. Channel 4's Chris Parenteau was at a news conference today ... where investigators revealed what led up to the violence. 3 3 0-515-20PKG Undersheriff Dwain Senterfitt says that officers did everything correctly when responding to the initial stabbing call.He says that once officers got inside and officer Steven Brown was attacked with a knife by 29 year old Brandon Peters, lethal force was needed. SOT 50:06 We had an officer with a taser and he used that. That was not effective. I don't believe the probes made contact like they were supposed to and it didn't work out.Quite honestly, if the officer with the taser would have used his pistol, I would be alright with that. This is somebody attacking somebody trying to kill them.We don't have to tase those people. This officer has the right to go home at the end of the night. VO Senterfitt says that there was an altercation between Peters and Officer Brown. Brown fired his rifle once, then had a malfunction with it.He cleared that and fired a second time.He had another problem with it, so he grabbed his pistol and fired again to try to stop Peters, but Brown did suffer a stab wound.SOT 47:09 áááMIGHT HAVE TO COVER IF WE DONT USE THE PICááá I know sometimes when we talk about this stuff, and we say someone has been stabbed or cut, people think there is a paper cut or something like that. That is what was done to the officer's arm.VO This was the third time in recent weeks that a Jacksonville Sheriff's Officer has had to fire their weapon at a suspect.Senterfitt says that in each case, officers did the right thing.SOT 50:47 We had one officer that was cut badly, one that was shot, and one that was shot at. So obviously all three were very legitimate responses to resistance that was offered. VO Senterfitt says the Sheriff's Office will look into what caused Brown's rifle to malfunction. He has been placed on paid administrative leave as is company policy.
