Pastor To Family: 'God Feels Your Pain'
Reporter Journal By Jennifer Waugh
While cameras and recording devices were not allowed at Tuesday morning's memorial service for Somer Thompson, reporters were welcome.Channel 4's Jennifer Waugh attended the emotional service and sent in this reporter's journal:
The sun peeked out from behind the clouds moments before Somer's mother and family pulled up to the church where a crowd of at least 700 welcomed them inside the First Baptist Church of Orange Park.
Diena Thompson sat in front of her daughter's small wooden casket, which was draped with a bouquet of purple carnations. Next to it was displayed what looked like Somer's first-grade school picture.
Pastor David Tarkington told the crowd of mourners that he believes part of healing is about smiling and laughing, encouraging the crowd to smile and laugh as they celebrate Somer's life. He began by telling stories of Somer through the people who knew the little girl best.
Somer's teachers described her as "vivacious, friendly, fun."
Tarkington called Somer a "community hugger," even hugging the crossing guards as she walked home to school.
"Somer was able to love greatly. She was also greatly loved," Tarkington said.
Somer loved to dance to Hannah Montana songs, play dress up and draw pictures.
"She had dressed in her genie costume days before Halloween and was excited about the upcoming holiday," Tarkington said.
Tarkington told the crowd a story about how much Somer and her sister enjoyed going to her nana's house where, at times, no boys were allowed. Grandpa was banished to the back porch to give the girls girl-time.
Somer' favorite song, "You Are My Sunshine" opened the service. The pastor says the song now holds a much deeper meaning to this community by reminding everyone of Somer's smile and vivaciousness.
Tarkington closed the service by saying:
"God is with Somer and her family. God has felt your pain and remembers every tear you've shed for a little girl taken too soon."
