3 A Channel 4 Safety Alert tonight ... We have been following a recent rash of deadly hit and run accidents in St.Johns county. 4 people have died in the last year. We've now learned ...the county has had MORE bicycle and pedestrian crashes than a lot of other counties in the state. There have been 49 accidents involving bicycles and 47 pedestrian crashes since January. Jennifer Waugh joins us with 5 rules you may not be aware of when it comes to sharing the road. 3 3 áááSTORYTELLERááá0-520-2548-53 We asked Commander Chuck Mulligan with the St.Johns county sheriff's office to help clear up confusion about sharing the road with a bicyclist or a pedestrian. Number one...drivers may not know ...state law designates a bicyclists as a vehicle. So a biker has as much right to be on the road...as you do. If there is one in front of you...you have to treat them as if they were a car. It also means...that a cyclist must stop at stop signs, use turn signals...and obey all traffic lights. Number 2...is equally important...you must have a certain amount of distance between your car and a bike- if you try to pass. Here's Chuck Mulligan. Tc:2:52 YOU SHOULD NOT PASS A BICYCLIST UNLESS THERE IS A MINIMUM OF THREE FEET BETWEEN YOU AND THAT BICYCLIST IN CASE THEY have TO SWERVE BECAUSE OF A POTHOLE OR SOME OBSTRUCTION IN PATH OR EDGE OF THE ROAD.) Here's a diagram to show you the proper way to pass...if there isn't 3 feet...then you need to wait until there is...or until the cyclist pulls off the road. Number 3...is a deadly mistake bicyclists have made ...You need to remember if you're on a bike...state law says you must ride in the same direction as the cars. 3 ) IF YOU ARE STRUCK FROM BEHIND INTO THE SOFT SHOULDER, NOT VAULTED INTO THE VEHICLE WHICH WE'VE SEEN OCCUR. IT'S THE SAFEST OF THE OPTIONS. ) Number 4...on the list of things you may not know when sharing the road...involves sidewalks. Mulligan says by law bicyclists are allowed to ride on the sidewalk...as long as they yield to pedestrians. There are some city ordinances -though- that trump state law...St.Augustine is one of them.) THEY HAVE PASSED AN ORDINANCE THAT MANDATES THEY CANNOT RIDE ON A SIDEWALK AND that'S PROBABLY BECAUSE THE TOURISM WE SEE IN ST. AUGUSTINE. AND NUMBER 5... PEDESTRIANS SHOULD WALK AGAINST THE FLOW OF TRAFFIC..IF THERE IS NOT A SIDEWALK AND THEY HAVE NO OTHER OPTION BUT TO WALK ALONGSIDE THE ROAD. WE HOPE THIS INFORMATION WILL HELP KEEP YOU SAFE.JENNIFER WAUGH- CHANNEL 4- TLS.
