A 66-year-old New York man died Saturday evening after he was struck by a car while attempting to cross U.S. Highway 1 in Starke, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Troopers say Bernard Tavernia stepped onto the highway at Andrews Street about 6:15 p.m. when he was struck by a car driven by Anthony Woods, 60, of Lake Butler. The pedestrian was transported to Shands Medical Center in Gainesville, where he died of his injuries.
Woods was not hurt.
According to the FHP report, neither the driver nor pedestrian had been drinking. No charges were expected in the case.
