Penn State athletic officials say the school paid out $5.76 million to the estate of Joe Paterno, the legendary former football coach.
The school gave his family the balance of his employment contract.
They say the end of his coaching career was considered a retirement, not a termination.
The board of trustees fired Paterno last November, saying he failed to tell the proper authorities about sexual misconduct by former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky.
