NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. -

Volusia County deputies say a pilot was killed in a plane crash in New Smyrna Beach on Wednesday afternoon.

The crash happened around 1 p.m. on Tumblin Drive just west of the athletic fields at the New Smyrna Beach Sports Complex, which is located near the airport.

Volusia County deputies said the twin engine Cessna 337 had just taken off from the airport when it crashed. The tower manager at the airport called in the crash at 1:13 p.m., according to deputies.

The plane broke apart upon impact, killing the pilot, 56-year-old Paul Rooy, of Daytona Beach, deputies said. No one else was on board, and no one on the ground was injured.

Video from WKMG-TV's helicopter showed debris from the plane across a field and a tree snapped in half.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board will be called in to investigate the cause of the crash.
