The Fernandina Beach Police Department has charged a 58-year-old man with capital sexual battery in a case that began a week ago as a child pornography arrest.
Eugenio Valeriano is accused of molesting a 6-year-old girl, and police say the case may involve another victim and another suspect.
Last Wednesday, officers went to the CVS Pharmacy on Sadler Road after the photo clerk reported finding nude pictures while developing film, police said. They said the photos depicted a very young girl posing for the camera.
The evidence was seized and the investigation given high priority because the identity and welfare of the victim was considered critical and time-sensitive, police said.
The 6-year-old girl was identified by detectives on Thursday and was interviewed along with family members.
Police said Valeriano was found to be living with the family. They said he was interviewed and confessed to being the person who took the photographs of the child and had them developed at CVS.
Police said Valeriano was immediately arrested and charged with child pornography. He was being held in the Nassau County Jail with bail initially set at $500,000.
Detectives said they continued the investigation and found that the girl had also been sexually molested by Valeriano. Police said the girl told them that Valeriano had sexually molested her on several occasions.
Valeriano was additionally charged with three counts capital sexual battery and was being held without bail on those charges.
