JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -

A 22-year-old man shot as he was riding in his car with his brother and a friend Wednesday evening died after he was dropped off at Shands Jacksonville Medical Center, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

Police say Kwame Gabe was in the right passenger seat of the car when he was shot in the back. He was driven to Shands by his brother, Javaris Wright, 20, but he could not be saved.

Police found a gunshot through the seat and a live round was found in the backseat, although no gun was located in the car.

Curtis Hordge, 19, who was in the backseat, repeatedly denied having a gun.

"Curtis and Javaris completely and continuously lied during the interview," JSO Lt. Rob Schoonover said. "They wanted to say the shot came from outside the vehicle, they had nothing to do with it, didn't know anything about it."

Police said neither of them were cooperating, but it was clear they got rid of the gun before they went to the hospital.

Hordge was charged with manslaughter, tampering with evidence and possession of marijuana. Wright is charged with tampering with evidence and driving with a suspended license. They were booked into the Duval County jail.
