ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -

Police in St. Augustine charged a 17-year-old with battery after they said he punched another teen, breaking his jaw and knocking him unconscious.

Police said that about 9 p.m. last Saturday, the 14-year-old victim was on St. George Street with his friend when another group of teens approached them. Police said a 17-year-old in the second group took a cap from the 14-year-old and ran down St. George Street away from him.

A short time later, the victim and his friend saw the group of other teens that took his cap, and he approached them and asked for his cap back, even offering to buy it back, police said.

The 17-year-old counted to three and struck the 14-year-old on the jaw, causing him to lose consciousness, police said.

An officer arrived and started to render aid to the teen and tried to find anyone in the crowd who may have seen what happened.

The 14-year-old was taken to a hospital and was found to have a broken jaw that required reconstructive surgery.

Police started interviewing witnesses Monday, and they were able to lead officers to a possible suspect. After initially denying involvement, the 17-year-old went to the Police Department with his parents and admitted striking the victim but not taking his cap, investigators said.

The teen was arrested and booked into the St. Johns County jail, then later released to his parents.
