Police: Woman sets up Newtown charity scam
Poses as victim's aunt
Federal authorities arrested a woman Thursday after they say she scammed donors who thought they were giving money to the family of a Newtown, Connecticut shooting victim.
Police say 37-year-old Nouel Alba used a Facebook account to pose as the aunt of 6-year-old Noah Pozner. Investigators say she solicited money claiming it would be used for a funeral fund.
Donors then transmitted money ot a PayPal account set up by Alba.
Pozner's uncle reacted with disgust to the scam.
"I look at my nieces and I think of these scammers, and they're stealing from them," Alexis Haller said. "They're survivors of this tragedy."
Alba, who is a mother of two teenagers, even sent elaborate messages to donors.
U.S. Attorney David Fein says the arrest should serve as a warning to anyone looking to profit from the tragedy.
