Authorities are investigating after police officers fatally shot a suspect in a nearby home invasion at a Miami flea market filled with holiday shoppers.
Miami-Dade police say the incident began Sunday when the suspects broke into a home. The victim followed the suspect and alerted police that the car involved in the home invasion was parked at the flea market. Because of the holiday shopping weekend, uniformed and plain clothes officers were working in the area and immediately began searching for the suspects.
The officers spotted the vehicle and began approaching it. The driver put it in reverse, struck a patrol car and, as shots were fired, came to a stop.
The driver was dead at the scene. The passenger was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital in critical condition. Their names have not been released.
None of the officers were hurt and no one in the area was hurt.
"I heard like 20 shots," one witness told WPLG-TV.
"Just listening to the gunshots, you know, it was just crazy," said another witness.
