Channel 4's Ashley Mitchem has a look at where the money would come from and what type of work would be involved. 3 3 3 00-0407-1318-2338:58 The city of St.Augustine is proposing to renovate commercial areas near the parking garage downtown. 3 3 ) 42:05 They see it as an economic development and they want a lasting legacy for the 450th so basically a gift to our city would be a streetscape improvement The streets being considered for renovations are Spanish, Hypolita, and Treasury. All streets need better storm water drainage, added street lights and sidewalks.42:27 These are very old streets in poor condition, especially Hypolita street and Treasury street- they don't have drainage SU: 44:40 One of the biggest concerns for these older streets- drainage- right now I'm on Spanish Street and you can see there's only been a light rain but it's completely flooded.SU:) This is what the city wants the streets to look like ... the people who live and work along these streets made a big push for the projet.41:40 This was driven by the property owners on those streets to advance a streetscape improvement project in preparation for the 450th.The nearly 3-million dollar project would be jointly funded. The city would pay half the cost and property owners along the affected streets would pay the other half over 15 years. The city already has $753,000- a grant from the federal Transit in Parks program to meet some of our new streetscape guidelines. If things go according to plan- construction on these streets could start in 2014 and last for about a year- possibly done by September 2015, when the city will have its 450th anniversary celebration.
